چکیده

This paper studies the income inequality and economic development relationship by using unbalanced panel data on OECD and non-OECD countries for the period 1962 2003. Nonparametric estimation results show that income inequality in OECD countries are almost on the backside of the inverted-U, while non-OECD countries are approximately on the foreside, except that the relationship in both country groups shows an upturn at a high level of development. Development has an indirect effect on inequality through control variables, but the modes are different in the two groups. Model specification tests show that the relationship is not necessarily captured by the conventional quadratic function. Cubic and fourth-degree polynomials, respectively, fit the OECD and non-OECD country groups better. Our finding is robust regardless whether the specification uses control variables. Development plays a dominant role in mitigating inequality.

Discriminant Analysis through a Semiparametric Model

We consider a semiparametric generalisation of normal-theory discriminant analysis. The semiparametric model assumes that, after unspecified univariate monotone transformations, the class distributions are multivariate normal. We introduce an estimation procedure based on the distribution quantiles, in which the parameters of the semiparametric model are estimated directly without estimating th...

Identification and estimation of distributional impacts of interventions using changes in inequality measures

Identification and Estimation of Distributional Impacts of Interventions Using Changes in Inequality Measures This paper presents semiparametric estimators of distributional impacts of interventions (treatment) when selection to the program is based on observable characteristics. Distributional impacts of a treatment are calculated as differences in inequality measures of the potential outcomes...

A Note on Bootstrap Moment Consistency for Semiparametric M-Estimation

The bootstrap variance estimate is widely used in semiparametric inferences. However, its theoretical validity is a well known open problem. In this note, we provide a first theoretical study on the bootstrap moment estimates in semiparametric models. Specifically, we establish the bootstrap moment consistency of the Euclidean parameter which immediately implies the consistency of t-type bootst...

The Relationship between the Inflation Rate and Inequality across U.S. States: A Semiparametric Approach

This paper uses a cross-state panel for the United States over the 1976 to 2007 period to assess the relationship between income inequality and the inflation rate. Employing a semiparametric instrument variable (IV) estimator, we find that the relationship depends on the level of the inflation rate. A positive relationship occurs only if the states exceed a threshold level of inflation rate. Be...

A Semiparametric Analysis of the Role of Inequality, Investment, and Government Expenditure in Economic Growth

The relationship between inequality, investment, and government expenditure and their impact on economic growth in a panel of countries is empirically analyzed via a fixed effects, semiparametric model. The analysis demonstrates that the marginal impact of inequality on growth is highly nonlinear, and depends critically on both the levels of investment and government expenditure. In the absence...
